WEEK 10


For the Manga comics, I read Ranma by Rumiko Takahashi. It was decent, but not great. I didn’t really connect or get engaged in these Manga comics because I wasn’t really familiar with them. Actually, what I think I didn’t like was that it was actually a silly story. Especially that whole panda thing. I felt like the author was bored and just decided to create a random flow instead of thinking through a story that really made sense. Ranma is about a family with three teenaged daughters. One is them must marry Ranma. This story of royal daughters meeting an honorable man has been shown and done in multiple stories, so for it to be interesting, it has to have a twist. Well, there’s a twist here, a gender-bending twist, but it was done poorly and was boring with all the back and forth of what gender Ranma was. I chose to read this comic though because I at least got a sense of the frame style and the imagery of what Manga comics. I tried to have an open mind, but I just didn’t like it as much as many others this semester, and I didn’t get some of the styles.

Week Seven

Maus is graphic novel that depicts one of the most horrifying events in human history.     Reading Maus was engaging, sad, and intense. It was a good depiction of what life was like before the Holocaust and about the rise of Nazism in Germany.             What made Maus engaging was the imagery.   Even though the characters are cats and mice, it’s very convincing, in how it depicts Jewish life and culture in Poland during this time. The mice are drawn so well that they seem human. When it shows Vladek as a young man, there is charm to his love life with women he dates, and with Anja, the woman he ends up marrying Anja and Vladek’s relationship was engaging because it depicts two people who really loved each other.   But there are also things about the characters’ personal lives that are sad, such as the time when Anja becomes depressed and hysterical about her life after the death of her child.   As a reader I really grasped her depression. Week 11

For week 11, I chose to read Pride of Baghdad. It was an incredibly sad story, which I personally believed sent a strong message about how terrible the war in Iraq was. It also made a strong point as to how much suffering there was for both people and animals alike when Iraq was bombed by the American led-coalitions.               This graphic novel has a powerful opening, in which the lions in the Baghdad zoo are communicating with one another on how to take matters into their own control. All the animals are angry and enraged at the keepers of the zoo. Their feelings and emotions really engaged me. It made me think about how even in 2018, a lot of animals are mistreated and held in misery in captivity.             When the American planes bomb the zoo and other parts of Baghdad, the story got even more intense. Week Six

The Underground Comic I read was Gay Comics copyrighted in 1980. Gay comics gave me a sense of struggle for the LGBTQ community before the 1980’s.               When I read Gay Comics, I got a clear understanding of what it was like to struggle with the effort to discover and define one’s sexuality/sexual attraction. One strip shows the reader a woman whose first love is another woman, and how she struggles to fit in with what is considered normal in society. The strip has three panels in sequential order, showing the protagonist not being able to do things that her parents, friends, or other family members can do because she is a gay woman.             Later strips reveal that she is bisexual. From these, another message I got is that it can be a struggle to choose which gender a bisexual person might want to be with because that individual might be stuck between a man and a woman who they have sexual feeling for.
